Board Members

  Chair - Tony Corallo

Tony Corallo joined RBC Royal Banks Senior Management Team on September 22, 2000 and is currently the Vice President for Northeastern Ontario, Commercial Financial Services. He holds a degree in Commerce. Along with his strong leadership skills, Tony brings a solid background of governance experience, which includes the Sudbury Food Bank and many other boards.

Vice Chair - Michael McCann

Michael McCann, is Manager, Smelting Operations, Vale-Inco. With his extensive professional experience, coupled with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from the University of Guelph and executive training in Operations Management from the University of Western Ontario’s Ivey School of Business, he brings a wealth of engineering, business and management knowledge to the table. He is also a skilled negotiator, having participated in bargaining with both labour and government. For the past year, Michael has served as a community member for the hospital’s Performance and Monitoring Committee.

Vice Chair - Russell Boyles

Russell Boyles is a Chartered Accountant and recognized business leader in the Sudbury community. He retired in 2000 as President, General Manager and Co-owner of Cambrian Ford Sales. Russell brings a great deal of governance experience, having served as Chair of the Sudbury and District Chartered Accountants Association, Treasurer of 20 years for the Huntington Conservatory of Music and Past Chair of the Manitoulin Sudbury District Health Council.

Treasurer - Lorella Hayes

Lorella Hayes, a native of Sudbury, is the Chief Financial Officer/City Treasurer for the City of Greater Sudbury where she provides strategic advice and leadership on all financial matters – with an annual budget of $500 million. As a Chartered Accountant, Ms. Hayes was previously a Senior Manager with KPMG LLP Chartered Accountants, where she was responsible for the overall management to some of KPMG’s largest audit clients. In the past, she also served as Treasurer for the Canadian Cancer Society.

 
  Acting Chief of Staff - Dr. Chris Bourdon

Dr. Chris Bourdon is currently acting Chief of Staff for the HRSRH. He is a practicing physician in the HRSRH Emergency Department (ED), and is also Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine for the Northern Ontario School of Medicine at Laurentian University. Dr. Bourdon is the ED lead for the Northeast Local Health Integrated Network, where he acts as an liaison for 25 ED geographic areas in Northeastern Ontario. He sits on a variety of committees, including the Medical Advisory Committee, Research Ethics Committee and is Chair of the Medical Quality Assurance Committee of the HRSRH.

President and CEO - Dr. Denis-Richard Roy

Dr. Denis-Richard Roy is an internationally-recognized leader and physician specializing in nephrology. Dr. Roy was CEO of the Centre hospitalier de l’Université de Montréal (CHUM) from 2002 to 2008. Over the past 20 years, Dr. Roy has held numerous leadership positions with McGill University Health Centre, Royal Victoria Hospital, Montreal Thoracic Institute and the Centre hospitalier régional de l’Outaouais, and was most recently Consulting Manager at CHUM.

Dr. Roy holds a Masters in Business Administration and his post-doctoral education includes an MRC Research fellow, Renal physiology from Stanford University in the US. He has been a member of several provincial, national and international boards including the Association of Canadian Academic Hospitals, Canadian Council on Health Services Accreditation, Medical Research Council of Canada, National Steering Committee on Prevention of Accidents in Health Care Delivery, Nice-Harvard Organizing Committee and served as Vice Chair of the Founding Board for the Canadian Patient Safety Institute. In 2008, he was asked to assist the State of Uttar Pradesh (India) in their planning for specialized hospitals.

Dr. Denis-Richard Roy is married to Dr. Monique Dubois-Roy, a family physician, and they have one son.

Roberta Bald

Roberta Bald is a lawyer, practising criminal law. She was born and raised in Sudbury and attended Laurentian University, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Geology in 1975. She was a research assistant in Chicoutimi, Quebec for a year then attended the University of Manitoba and completed a Master of Science degree in Earth Science in 1981. She worked as a geological consultant, based in Timmins, from 1984 to 1990. In 1994, she attended Osgoode Hall Law School in North York, earning a law degree in 1997 and was called to the bar in February, 1999. With her family, she was very fortunate to be able to return to Sudbury in 2003. 

Nicole Everest

Nicole Everest is the former Senior Vice President, Corporate Operations, Zurich Financial Services. A native of Sudbury, Nicole is a seasoned senior executive with a strong international background in operations, mergers and acquisitions as well as managing large scale projects. She has served as a school board trustee, and on the Board of a not-for-profit child care operator providing care to over 8,000 children in the Region of Peel, which included two terms as Board Chair. Nicole holds an Executive MBA from the University of Western Ontario as well as a Certificate in Human Resources Management from York University. 

 
Deborah Fildes

Deborah Fildes is a member of the Matachewan First Nation and is currently working for Nog-Da-Win-Da-Min Community and Family Services as a Family Preservation Worker stationed at Atikameksheng formerly known as Whitefish Lake First Nation. She has an extensive educational background beginning with Women’s programs at Algonquin College, Health Sciences and Radiography from Cambrian College and a Bachelor’s of Social Work from Laurentian University. While doing her honours degree, she received recognition as a Thorneloe Scholar for women’s studies. Deborah’s social work practice has been predominantly in child welfare. She also has a long history of volunteerism including six years past experience as a palliative care volunteer with the Sudbury Regional Hospital.

 
Tim James

Tim James is an architect and partner in the Castellan James & Partners Architects firm in Sudbury, and brings experience that will enhance the Boards skill sets in the area of capital and construction management. He is a member of the Rotary Club of Sudbury and sat as a member of St. Andrew’s Place Board of Directors, having served as Chair in 2002.

 
Dr. Jason Prpic
 

Dr. Jason Prpic is the new Vice-President of the HRSRH Medical Staff. Dr. Prpic has been a physician in the HRSRH Emergency Department since 2002. Dr. Prpic graduated from medical school at Ottawa University and completed his residency in emergency medicine at the HRSRH. A Sudbury native, Dr. Prpic received his undergraduate degree from Laurentian University. He is currently the Medical Director of the Northeastern Ontario PreHospital Care Program.

 
Rachel Prudhomme

Rachel Prudhomme is a Professional Engineer and has led projects in mining, municipal, civil and construction engineering in Canada, South America and Europe. She has extensive management experience and has also held academic appointments as a university lecturer and as Dean of Engineering Technology, Business, Commerce and Trades at Collège Boréal. She is currently President of MAG Engineering and Constructors International Limited. Ms. Prudhomme has served on numerous Provincial Advisory Councils and various local boards. She is the longest serving member of the Board of Trustees of Science North and also serves on the Greater Sudbury Development Corporation and the Sudbury Airport Community Development Corporation. Ms. Prudhomme is a lifelong resident of Northern Ontario.

Patrice Sawyer

Dr. Patrice Sawyer is currently Vice-President, Research and Graduate Studies at Laurentian University. A full professor with the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, Dr. Sawyer has also served as department Chair and Dean of Science and Engineering, as well as Acting Vice-President Francophone Affairs and Academic Staff Relations. He has been the Laurentian representative for the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada for the past eight years, and has also contributed as a member of several research-intensive boards of directors, including the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory Institute, and the Mining Innovation, Rehabilitation and Applied Research Corporation. Dr. Sawyer completed his undergraduate degree at Laval University and his graduate degree at McGill University.

Jean-Marc Spencer

Jean-Marc Spencer is the Executive Director of La Caisse populaire des Voyageurs, with its headquarters in Sudbury and several offices throughout Ontario. He is a graduate of the Fellow Institute of Canadian Bankers (F.I.C.B.) and is presently completing his Master’s Degree in Business Administration (MBA).  Jean-Marc was President of the Club Richelieu les Patriotes de Sudbury and Collège Boréal Foundation Board. He has also served on several volunteer boards, including the Boards of Collège Boréal and the former Laurentian Hospital.

 
Dr. Roger Strasser

Dr. Roger Strasser is the Founding Dean of the Northern Ontario School of Medicine (NOSM), a joint initiative of Lakehead University, Thunder Bay and Laurentian University, Sudbury. Prior to his position at the NOSM, he was Professor of Rural Health for Monash University and Head of the Monash University School of Rural Health in Australia.

Paul Toffanello

Paul Toffanello is the former Director of Education and C.E.O. for the Northeastern Catholic D.S.B. He has served in the roles of Superintendent of Education and Principal of two high schools in the city of Timmins and served as a teacher for more than 17 of his 31 years in education. Paul holds a Masters of Education and a Bachelor of Education through Nipissing University, and achieved his Bachelor of Arts in English at Carleton University.

Sandra Wallenius

Sandra Wallenius, a resident of Sault Ste. Marie, has a keen interest in health care issues and has served on a number of health-related Boards, such as the Northeast Mental Health Centre, Community Care Access Centre and Children’s Aid Society. Her educational background in counselling and social studies lends itself well to her professional achievements as a University instructor at various institutions, a secondary school teacher and vice-principal and a professional counsellor.

 
Dr. Peter Zalan

Dr. Peter Zalan was recently elected President of the HRSRH Medical Staff. Dr. Zalan is past Chief of Critical Care and a practicing physician in Anesthesiology and Critical Care at the HRSRH. He is also an Assistant Professor at the Northern Ontario School of Medicine. Dr. Zalan is co-Chair of the Sudbury ALC Steering Group, and a member of the HRSRH Ethics Committee.
