Hospital Standardized Mortality Ratio

The Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI) publicly releases HSMR results annually for eligible hospitals (those with 2,500 or more HSMR cases) on its website. Eligible hospitals are also required to have their information publicly posted on their websites.

HSMR is an overall quality indicator and measurement tool that compares a hospital’s mortality rate with the overall average rate. Public reporting of safety indicators such as HSMR further enhances patient safety and overall quality of care, which are of high importance to the HRSRH. It has been used by hospitals worldwide to assess and analyze mortality rates, and to identify areas for improvement.

As one of the HRSRH’s performance indicators, HSMR is reviewed regularly by the hospital’s Medical Quality Assurance Committee and the Board’s Quality Committee, and forms part of the hospital’s balanced scorecard reporting.
