"If you think research is expensive, try disease".
Mary Lasker (1901-1994)
(Mary Lasker was a powerful and tireless American philanthropist and citizen lobbyist who advocated for increased funding for medical research)

The Tumour Biology Research Group of the Regional Cancer Program at the Hôpital Régional de Sudbury Regional Hospital was founded in 1996 in order to provide a critical mass of researchers in molecular and cellular biology for "translation" of basic research into clinical practice. Since the establishment of the group, the four tumour biology researchers have garnered significant national peer recognition by being awarded a number of research grants from Canada's peer-reviewed research agencies.

"Men love to wonder, and that is the seed of science."
Ralph Waldo Emerson

Drs. Robert Lafrenie, Hoyun Lee, Amadeo Parissenti, and Leslie Sutherland have or have held grants from the Ontario Institute of Cancer Research (OICR), Canadian Institutes for Health Research (CIHR), the National Cancer Institute of Canada (NCIC), the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), the Cancer Research Society of Canada (CRSC), the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation-Ontario Chapter (CBCF), the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada (HSF) and the Ontario Research and Development Challenge Fund (ORDCF). The group also boasts support from the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC) and the Northern Cancer Research Foundation (NCRF). Local support of tumour biology research by the Northern Cancer Research Foundation at the Regional Cancer Program has been instrumental in providing necessary "seed" funding for a number of the successful grant applications. Funding from private sector sources has also been secured.
