Critical Care Program


The Critical Care program crosses the spectrum of patient care from registration, diagnostics, intensive care, to in-patient units and outpatient rehabilitative services. Our continued success is a tribute to the skill and ability of our many health care professionals and support workers.

Intensive Care Unit (ICU)

The ICU consists of 29 critical care and 12 step-down unit beds. It provides critical care services to the citizens of northeastern Ontario in its tertiary care role in cardiology, cardiac surgery, cardiac rehabilitation, trauma, nephrology and neurosurgery.

The ICU also supports the internal needs of the Emergency and Medical, Surgical, Regional Cancer, Family and Child, Mental Health and Addictions, Ambulatory Care and Cardiac programs, as well as responding to the CritiCall Network. A Critical Care Response Team was initiated at the St. Joseph’s Health Centre in 2006. 


Respiratory
The Respiratory Department consists of highly trained staff supported by three Respirologists. Respiratory therapists and support staff play a valued role in patient care throughout the hospital system, from critical care through to outpatient clinics including diagnostic testing and pulmonary rehabilitation.

Cardiac

As a comprehensive Regional Cardiac Centre for northeastern Ontario, the cardiac program was founded over 30 years ago and has become a focal point for community support achieving international recognition for its clinical services. New procedures both in the operating room and in the cardiac catheterization area, such as beating heart surgery, complex valve surgery, and percutaneous coronary interventions have kept the HRSRH’s program at the leading edge of cardiac care.

Cardiac rehabilitation is an integral part of the continuum of health care provision to cardiac patients and acts as a resource to other programs in the northeast. The HRSRH is a part of the Cardiac Care Network of Ontario and a full participant in the provincial wait list strategy.
