    Emergency Department (ED)

The Emergency Department provides care to 63,000 people each year, which includes trauma patients. Trauma is the leading cause of death under the age of 45 in northeastern Ontario and there are 70% more deaths from trauma in northeastern Ontario than in the rest of the province. Services include a comprehensive range of programs, and care is provided to a full spectrum of patients including infants, children, adults and the elderly.

    Trauma
The Trauma Program is an active participant in the Ontario Trauma Registry and the HRSRH is one of only 11 hospitals in the province given Lead Trauma Hospital designation. As a trauma referral centre, the HRSRH is able to abstract and contribute data which facilitates the reduction of trauma injury admissions and deaths via planning and evaluation of prevention programs, legislative changes and cost expenditures provincially.

The program provides core trauma education, such as Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) and Pediatric Advance Life Support (PALS) to health care providers, and maintains an active quality assurance program. Clinical activities include chart reviews, patient and family interactions, ongoing communication with multidisciplinary care teams, quality improvement, research, injury prevention and administration.

    Acute Medicine

The HRSRH provides multidisciplinary team-based care for patients requiring admission to hospital. Family physicians, hospitalists and internists, as well as other specialty services, provide a full-range of treatment and care, working collaboratively with registered nurses, nurse practitioners, social workers, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, respiratory therapists, pharmacists and other allied health professionals. Acute medicine is supported by a number of ambulatory programs including

    • the asthma clinics,
    • pulmonary rehab,
    • diabetes education and care,
    • HIV care, hemophilia clinic,
    • primary care clinic
    • and the medical care unit.

PreHospital Care Program for northeastern Ontario(NEOPCP)

A Base Hospital is a hospital that has been designated by the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care to monitor and ensure the quality of land ambulance-based pre-hospital patient care by providing land ambulance paramedics with medical direction and advice. Base Hospitals assist the Ministry in ensuring that land ambulance-based pre-hospital care and transportation meets provincial patient care standards, and provide medical control, quality assurance, and continuing medical education to the ambulance services under its authority.

569 paramedics (66 Advanced Care Paramedics and 503 Primary Care Paramedics) are certified under NEOPCP.
