Family and Child

The Family and Child Program provides care for family and child beginning from conception to birth, and extending to children up to 16 years of age. The program offers a continuum of services from acute hospital care, to care in the home or in the community. Level II perinatal services are provided to patients from urban and rural catchment areas in Network 11.

Perinatal Service

With 1,800 deliveries a year, the HRSRH hosts a 25-bed obstetrical unit (3 bed ante-partum, 5 labour rooms, 17 beds post-partum) and provides family-centered care in a comfortable "care by parent" setting. Sleep chairs are available in most post-partum rooms to accommodate one support person for an overnight stay dependant on unit census.

Patients presenting for Labour and Delivery are assessed in the Obstetrical triage. We offer outpatient antenatal testing (NST) and a Prenatal Preadmission Clinic. Labour workshops are available for a nominal fee. Currently, the department is staffed by OB/GYN physicians, family practice physicians with OBs privileges, midwives, and a collaborative interdisciplinary team.

Paediatrics

The 16-bed Pediatric Unit provides intra-disciplinary care for children up to 16 years of age. The unit supports several outpatient services, including pediatric medical and surgical daycare. Visiting specialist clinics include those in Orthopedic, Rheumatology and Cardiology.

Our Cystic Fibrosis and Botox Clinics support families throughout the North East.

Infant Development

Infant Development is a home-based early intervention service for infants/children ages birth to five years, who have, or are at risk for a developmental delay. Parents/caregivers are assisted in recognizing, understanding and facilitating their child’s development and in accessing community services.

Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)

The NICU provides intra-disciplinary, modified, Level III care for infants of 29 weeks gestation or greater.

The care team includes Dietitians, Nursing Staff, Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists, Respiratory Therapists, Spiritual and Religious Care Workers, Pediatricians/Neonatologist and Social Workers.

Children's Treatment Centre

The Children’s Treatment Centre is a family-centred community-based rehabilitation facility providing assessment, treatment, consultation and education to children and young adults with motor and communication impairments.

The Centre strives for the best quality of life and health for its clients by enhancing their self-esteem and facilitating their function, independence and community participation.

Domestic Violence / Sexual Assault

Specially trained nurses provide a 24/7 emergency service to adult survivors of domestic abuse, and adult and child survivors of acute sexual violence.

The patient is provided with options of care including emergency medical intervention and prophylaxis, forensic documentation and photography, the collection of forensic evidence, as well as initial and follow-up counselling and referral. The Program also promotes prevention through education and research.
