What happens during a genetic counselling appointment?
- You will meet with a genetic counsellor or physician (geneticist).
- Your family’s medical history is reviewed so that we understand your concerns and give you accurate information.
- A physical exam may be done.
- Genetic testing is available for some conditions. Once the testing is explained, you can decide to have the testing or not.
- A diagnosis of a genetic condition may be made or confirmed in your family. This could happen in a pregnancy or in an infant, child or adult. You will learn about what this diagnosis means for you and other members of your family.
The genetic counselling staff can help you:
- Plan for managing health care needs
- Obtain a referral to other specialists
