Preventive Oncology and Screening
Preventive Oncology and Screening Division
To meet Cancer Care Ontario’s (CCO) and Canadian Cancer Society’s (CCS) Ontario Division Cancer 2020 Action Plan targets, the Preventive Oncology and Screening Division (POSD) collaborates with health care organizations and providers to offer programs and interventions for the prevention and early detection of cancer for the population of North East Ontario.

The POSD administers the Ontario Breast Screening Program – North East in partnership with its affiliated screening sites and breast assessment centres. Regional coordination is also provided for ColonCancerCheck (Colorectal Cancer Screening Program), HRSRH-Hospital Based Smoking Cessation Program, Aboriginal Cancer Prevention and Screening initiatives and activities of the Cancer Prevention and Screening Network – North East.

Cancer Prevention and Screening Network – North East (CPSN-NE)

The Cancer Prevention and Screening Network framework was developed by Cancer Care Ontario in March 2000 to augment the work of Regional Cancer Centres in planning, coordinating, implementing and evaluating cancer prevention and screening activities in their regions. The CPSN-NE aligns its strategic direction with the Cancer Care Ontario (CCO) Cancer 2020 plan, released in May 2003.
The North East network was established under the name Regional Provider Network (RPN) in June 2000 and consists of regional and district (public health unit district) representatives whose workplace activities involve cancer prevention and screening strategies. In 2007 the RPN changed its name to the Cancer Prevention and Screening Network-North East.

CPSN-NE Purpose:
The purpose of the CPSN-NE is to share information and collaborate on cancer prevention and screening promotion activities, which will assist North Eastern Ontario to meet the Cancer 2020 targets for Cancer Prevention and Screening.

CPSN-NE Objectives:
·         To identify, plan, implement and evaluate a CPSN-NE action plan that will deliver at least one evidence based cancer prevention priority and one cancer screening priority, annually.
·         To facilitate the sharing of resources among member agencies/services through partnerships and the communication pathways of the Canadian Cancer Society, Public Health units, Primary Health Care Providers and Teams, other Chronic Disease Non-Governmental Organization (NGO’s), the Northern Ontario School of Medicine, Aboriginal and French Language Health services as well as other stakeholders.
