Radiation Treatment
The Radiation Treatment Team
Specialists from various disciplines work as a team to ensure that the patient receives the best possible care.

The Radiation Oncologist
The Radiation Oncologist is a physician who specializes in the use of radiation to treat cancer. The Oncologist determines the most effective way to care for each patient by prescribing an individualized treatment plan. During the course of treatment, the Oncologist monitors a patient’s progress and assists them with any side effects they may be experiencing.

The Radiation Oncology Nurse
The Radiation Oncology Nurse, specifically trained in the needs of cancer patients, works closely with the Radiation Oncologist throughout a patient’s radiation treatment. These professionals will answer questions and concerns of patients and family members, assisting in managing each patient’s care as well as providing preventive, educational and supportive services.

The Medical Radiation Physicist
Medical Radiation Physicists assist in implementing a comprehensive quality assurance program, are responsible for radiation safety, the calibration of treatment equipment, and the measurement of dosimetric data and patient dose calculation protocols. Our active radiation safety program exceeds governmental regulations, guaranteeing absolute protection of patients, staff and the public.

Radiation Department Support Staff
Electronics Technologists maintain the treatment equipment in a safe and reliable condition, so that treatment machines perform optimally, ensuring the proper amount of radiation is being produced and delivered during treatment.

The Radiation Therapist
Radiation Therapists are specialists trained to prepare and deliver radiation treatments. These treatment ‘fractions’ are administered exactly as prescribed by the Radiation Oncologists on a daily basis. Radiation Therapists use a sophisticated computer system to calculate the distribution of radiation dose within an individual patient, and are responsible for planning a patient's treatment.

The Dental Oncology Clinic
The Oncology Dentist and staff specialize in the dental care of cancer patients, particularly patients with cancer in the head or neck region. Complications arising before or during treatment that may affect the patient’s dental health are addressed in this Clinic.

The Booking Clerk
The Booking Clerk coordinates the patient’s appointments for treatment planning and treatment delivery, transportation arrangements and accommodation needs.

Students
The Radiation Treatment Department of the Regional Cancer Program actively participates in training men and women in careers in radiation oncology.

Associated Health Professionals
Nutrition Services and Psychosocial Resources are available to the patient as part of the radiation treatment team.
